Why Go Electric?
Health & Wellness
Improve indoor air quality by removing fossil fuel based systems that can release carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, and other harmful pollutants.
Climate Friendly
Clean heating technologies tied to the MA electric grid produce 40-60% less carbon emissions than traditional fossil fuel based systems. Be a part of Cambridgeโs climate goals to reach net zero emissions by 2050!
Comfort
Properly sized heat pumps can radically improve your homeโs temperature and humidity year round, keeping you comfortable and your house healthy.
Schedule a Consultation Today
Residential and commercial consultations, covering single-family homes, triple-deckers, or large multifamily buildings, can cover installing cool roofs, heat pumps, water heaters, induction stoves, solar panels, energy efficiency measures, and more.
Electrify Cambridge consultations are provided by independent technical experts and are made available by the City of Cambridge at no cost to you. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and resources you need to move forward with confidence!
- Identifying electrification options and considerations for your home or building
- Working with contractors and installers to select electric technologies
- Evaluating performance of proposed installations
- Coordinating and mapping out multiple electrification installationsย

Why Get a Cool Roof?
A โCool Roofโ is a roof that reflects more heat and energy than it absorbs. This means that it is easier to regulate a buildings temperature.
There are many potential benefits of getting a cool roof. Benefits can include reducing your buildings energy demand for cooling by reflecting heat and light rather than absorbing it. This helps with regulating indoor temperatures especially during the summer, and improving the efficacy and longevity of nearby equipment such as HVAC units and solar panels, while also helping to mitigate the surrounding heat island effect.
Installing a cool roof is a low-cost, low-effort action that you can take to improve the overall health and function of your building and equipment, while saving costs.
Electrifying Technologies
Air Source Heat Pumps
Powered by electricity, heat pumps keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter; even at freezing temperatures! Heat pumps can be integrated into your existing heating system or can provide 100% of your homeโs heating and cooling. Adopting heat pumps can displace massive amounts of carbon emissions and help you lower your overall heating and cooling costs.
Home Energy Assessments
& Weatherization
Schedule a no-cost energy assessment today and receive access to generous Mass Save rebates and incentives to make long-term energy-saving upgrades easier on your wallet. Receive a custom home energy report and qualify for free air sealing, 75% off approved insulation improvements, 0% HEAT Loan financing, and more.
Solar PV
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems create electricity from sunlight, providing onsite energy generation. Utilize the endless power of the sun to reduce or eliminate your electricity bills, while also gaining energy independence and increasing your control over your homeโs energy choices.
Cool Roofs
Cool roofs reflect sunlight and heat away from your building. This can have many positive benefits from helping to regulate temperature and reduce the energy needed for cooling, to increasing the lifespan and efficacy of nearby equipment like solar panels. Some cool roofs can be installed easily, like applying a coating of specialized paint.
Heat Pump Water Heaters
Heat pump water heaters use the technology of heat pumps to heat up your homeโs water and move it throughout your home to showers, sinks, and washing machines. Without having to rely on fossil fuels or antiquated electric resistance tanks, your heat pump water heater can be three times more efficient than conventional water heaters.
Solar Hot Water
A solar hot water system uses the sun’s energy to heat water, filling your pipes with responsiblyย generated hot water. Solar collectors, typically mounted on your roof, absorb heat from the sun and transfer it into a storage tank that stores the preheated water. Operating costs are lower than heating hot water with natural gas, oil, propane, or electric resistance.
Induction Cooking
Using electromagnetism, induction cooktops heat pots and pans directly with a magnetic field, instead of using an electric or gas-heated element. Cooking with an induction stove wastes less energy, is safer, as it requires no open heating elements, heats up ~50% faster, and offers you precise control over the temperature of each pan.
Household appliances
Mass Save offers generous rebates for electric home appliances, including heat pump clothes dryers and lawn equipment. You can also tap into incentives designed to increase the energy efficiency of your dehumidifiers, clothes washers, pool pumps, and so much more.
Electric Transportation
Electric transportation is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint! E-bikes are an easy way to get around town, travel longer distances, or carry a heavy load on two wheels. Electric vehicles are another cleaner alternative to gas-powered transportation.
Community Electricity
The Cambridge Community Electricity program is a City electricity aggregation program that supports the development of local renewable energy projects and saves you money! The program offers the potential for savings compared with Eversourceโs Basic Service price (though savings cannot be guaranteed), and provides a City-vetted alternative to Eversourceโs Basic Service and to other electricity offerings in the marketplace.
