Required Step 1

Abode Virtual Consultation

Schedule a time to meet with an Abode Decarbonization Specialist. Your specialist will guide you through the RMLD heat pump and weatherization program, providing project support as you evaluate your options and next steps.

Required Step 2

Weatherization Work Scope

Customers must work with a participating weatherization contractor to determine exactly what weatherization improvements should be made to the home. Participating weatherization contractors follow standardized recommendations and pricing aligned with statewide programs, ensuring customers only need to receive one comprehensive work scope. Contractors are required to follow pre- and post-installation quality assurance, which is reviewed by Abode.

Installers on the list have been vetted and certified by Abode Energy Management to confirm they hold the required licenses, have completed relevant training and certifications, and are fully qualified to serve RMLD customers participating in the rebate process.

Step 3

Get Heat Pump Quotes

Get heat pump Installer quotes. RMLD offers a participating contractor list of heat pump installers for customers to select from.

Connect with an expert at Abode for further support, design review, or quote comparison services. Abode offers a Heat Pump Quote Comparison service to RMLD customers at no cost to help you evaluate your options.

Required Step 4

Incentive Application

Choose from three RMLD Incentive options: Whole-Home Heat Pump Rebate, Whole-Home Heat Pump Zero-Interest Loan, or Partial-Home Heat Pump Rebate. Please review the Rebate Requirements section below to confirm that your planned project meets all eligibility criteria.

After you have chosen which heat pump and weatherization quote or proposal you plan to move forward with, submit this Incentive Application before installing the heat pump system to make sure that you meet the program requirements. Abode reviews the submission for install quality and rebate eligibility.

Customers pursuing the Whole-Home Heat Pump Zero-Interest Loan option must be approved by RMLD following Abode’s review of project eligibility. Loan customers must submit the Incentive Application before both weatherization and heat pump installation.

Required Step 5

Install & Rebate Processing

The heat pump and weatherization contractor/installer needs to submit Post-Installation Quality Assurance for review and final approval of the rebate by Abode and RMLD. Once approved, customers can expect to receive their rebate by mail within 6 to 8 weeks, provided all customer and contractor requirements are met – including confirmation that the Town Wiring Inspection has been completed and reported to RMLD by the contractor.

If applying for the RMLD Whole-Home Heat Pump Zero-Interest Loan customers will receive a rebate for qualifying weatherization work, if applicable

Reading rebates

Customers who heat their homes with natural gas qualify for Mass Save® heat pump rebates and are not eligible for heat pump or weatherization incentives through RMLD. The qualifying equipment and incentive application process between RMLD’s program and the Mass Save program are different, so please be sure to familiarize yourself with the eligibility requirements before installing any equipment.

RMLD has three incentive options for customers:

Option 1: Whole-Home Heat Pump Rebate
Option 2: Whole-Home Heat Pump Zero-Interest Loan
Option 3: Partial-Home Heat Pump Rebate

Note: Standalone weatherization incentives are not available.
Customers must first complete a no-cost virtual consultation with Abode.

Effective March 5, 2025

The HVAC industry is transitioning away from R410A refrigerants and to A2L refrigerants, like R-454B and R-32, to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

Beginning January 1, 2026, the EPA ruling prohibits the installation of new HVAC systems with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) >700. The Mass Save Heat Pump Qualified Product List will be removing any R410 refrigerants to align with the new standard. Similarly, all systems selected using the NEEP ccASHP Qualified Product List must be selected using the “All A2L” or other A2L refrigerant selection (e.g., R-454B, R-32) to align with EPA’s new transition rule.  Models with R410A refrigerant will no longer be eligible for rebates when installed on or after January 1, 2026. Invoices for installations using R410A refrigerants will need to list an install date of December 31, 2025 or before to qualify for a rebate.

All three incentive options require the home to be sufficiently weatherized before heat pump installation. Sufficient weatherization can be demonstrated by satisfying either of the following requirements: (A) Home was built in 2010 or later (B) Weatherization recommendations made in 2013 or later have been completed.

Weatherization requirements apply to insulation, ventilation, and air sealing measures only.
